
Home to over 750 freshwater springs, Florida provides a unique, exciting experience to Scuba divers available nowhere else in the world. More world-class cave divers, rescue divers, and instructors call the state of Florida home than any other state in the US, and more than any other nation in the world.
The real draw to Florida is the sheer variety in diving experiences available. From any point in the state, you can experience spring, river, lake, ocean, and cave diving with 4 hours of driving or less. This versatility makes Florida very popular for instructors, as they can train for any diving environment with very little travel.
Continuing my series of Florida springs, I will discuss another natural offering found in the Florida Panhandle.
Vortex Spring
Touting itself as the "Fountain of Cool," Vortex spring is a highly-developed first magnitude spring with a medium sized basin. "Cool" may even be an understatement, as the water in Vortex Spring remains a constant 68 degrees. That may just seem slightly below comfortable room temperature, but 68 degrees in the water feels like 20 degrees in the air!
